The washing machine has changed little over the years and shows no signs of user centered design, although being the center of the laundry process. An ethnographic research was conducted to address user experience and emotional factors within the process of doing laundry.
The results of a videography research and a quantitative questionnaire showed that a key emotion in interacting with the washing machine is trust. Participants mistrusted their washing machine and compensated this by, for instance, only using one program or the elaborate use of detergent. Further the research suggested to understand the laundry process as a whole and to innovate not only on the washing machine itself.
